Sergio Tomani Tuka Flats in Violet
I purchased them at CitiShoes in San Francisco
Other colors available online at Ashbury Skies and at Amazon; about $159.
Overall Verdict: ★★★★☆

Sergio Tomani’s adorable Tuka flats solve an almost impossible design challenge for someone with triangle-shaped feet like mine. Usually with ballet flats, the forefoot is too narrow and the heel is too wide— which means my pinkies are in pain and my ankles slide out. Also, most flats are just that—too flat! They leave me with headaches from pounding the pavement on unsupportive soles.
However, the Tukas expertly handle this situation. They have an adjustable tie at the top to accommodate different widths. The leather is super soft and cradles your heel. The cushioning inside and outside is supportive enough to sustain a day at the office, a walk around the park or a social event without impact or stress.
Plus, the Tukas are really stylish, bright and attractive, so you can stand out from the usual dress-shoe monotones. They come in an assortment of colors, and you can choose a shade to match your style. I love these violet ones, which match everything, and add a fun hue to compliment autumn's browns and oranges.
According to their website, Sergio Tomani crafts their shoes in Colombia, “inspired by local techniques and unconventional production.” Unfortunately, these shoes are not generally available online; you can mostly buy them at specialty stores. I found mine at CitiShoes in San Francisco, an excellent spot for comfortable, supportive and varied-width shoes.
Sizing and Width: I bought the shoes in size 37. There is no narrow/wide width sizing. They are soft and comfortable from front to back, and cause no discomfort for the width of my forefoot. My ankle occasionally slides out, but not in a way that regularly disrupts walking or causes blisters/scraping.
Weight: The shoes are light and comfortable to wear.
Heel: The heel is about a ½-inch supportive rubber cushion that gradually slopes to a flat base at the arch. This absorbs shock and eliminates the pounding feeling that persists with most flats. Plus it means a smooth, soft and quiet ride.
Arch: The sole offers a slight arch that provides some cushion. If you are a serious overpronator, you won’t have enough support to hold your foot in place. Because these are adjustable leather shoes, you might be able to add an orthotic or slim arch support insert.
Forefoot: The forefoot also has some soft cushioning that distinguishes these shoes from any other flats I’ve worn. If you usually experience pain or shock in your toes or joints, these shoes will be a comfortable treat.
Leather: As stated earlier, the leather is soft and comfortable. It easily stretches to fit your size and does not rub or blister.
Motion Control: With no straps and minimal arch support, these shoes allow more motion than Mary Janes or closed shoes. If you require more motion control, they would not be a good choice.
Breathability: Despite the fact that these are all leather, I find them surprisingly un-sweaty. Probably because when I sit, I slip my feet in and out of them! I wear them without hose, but as winter approaches I will test them with my favorite tights and see if there is a difference.
Versatility: The Tukas can be worn with clothes that range from everyday to business casual/light formalwear. They are excellent for light walking and daily activities, but not supportive enough for long treks or high impact.
